Policy for the Management of Behaviour

Purpose

This policy should be read in conjunction with the school's policy for Anti-Bullying.
To help and encourage children to develop self-discipline and a sense of responsibility for themselves, their peers and the wider community. To protect the right of every child to feel safe, happy and secure in School and to enable them to become courteous and considerate members of the community.

To protect the right of every child to a good education, because good behaviour is not only an essential personal and social skill but a prerequisite for effective teaching and learning.

Method of Achievement

The School has a clear and simple ethos which values kindness and honesty and which is shared by all members of the School community. Children are taught to respect the rights of others and to understand and be tolerant of differences between themselves and their peers. Children are taught to recognise and begin to control their own feelings and emotions.
We have high expectations of appropriate behaviour, which are supported by School and Classroom routines and frameworks.
Simple moral codes of conduct are constantly exemplified and affirmed in all aspects of children’s learning and they are taught to empathise with others and to resolve conflicts peacefully.
Children are encouraged to tell an adult if they are feeling anxious or unhappy.
Children themselves take an active role in developing codes of conduct for the School and their classrooms.
There is a consistency of approach towards behavioural issues and all members of staff encourage and secure good behaviour by personal example, positive reinforcement and clearly defined expectations.
Good behaviour is celebrated and rewarded and inappropriate behaviour is quickly challenged and appropriately sanctioned.
Assemblies and circle times are used to share concerns and resolve conflicts and to promote a sense of working together towards shared goals and positive relationships.
We have a strong partnership with parents in which expectations are shared and agreed and concerns are promptly communicated.
When a child’s behaviour is seen to be at odds with our expectations, they are firmly reprimanded by a member of staff and, if appropriate, by the Headteacher.
If incidents of unacceptable behaviour continue, the Classteacher will invite the child’s parents to come in and discuss the matter and to gain a better understanding of any possible causes. At this stage we will work in partnership to agree shared strategies for supporting the child and for re- establishing appropriate behaviour.
If the problem cannot be resolved in this way, the Headteacher, Classteacher and Special Needs Teacher will work together with the parents and the child to develop a Behavioural Support Plan. It may be necessary at this stage to involve outside agencies such as the Behavioural Support Team or the Educational Psychologist.
All Teaching Staff and Support Staff are authorised to use “reasonable force” in order to restrain a child. This may be by:-
• Physically interposing between pupils
• Standing in the way of a pupil
• Appropriately restraining a child by holding
• Leading a child away from an incident or moving them away by gentle pressure on the centre of the back
All incidents involving such restraint must be reported in the Incident Book and the Headteacher must also be informed.
In the event of a complaint by a parent/guardian, the Headteacher must record the complaint in writing and a full investigation must take place immediately.
The Headteacher and Governors have the right to exclude any child whose behaviour is not appropriate to the expectations of the School. This will be done in accordance with Hampshire and Government guidelines

Conclusion

We believe that praise and positive reinforcement within an atmosphere of trust and openness are the most effective means of developing self-esteem and self-discipline. Our primary aim is to nurture and protect a School environment where high standards of care, consideration, tolerance and behaviour are integral to all areas of our daily lives and enjoyed by everyone.
